US museums to exhibit Vietnamese antiques

Under permission of the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism, the Cultural Heritage Department will send 114 Vietnamese antiques to the U.S for public display, it was announced recently.

The Museum of Vietnamese History, Ho Chi Minh City

The exhibits include Hindu and Buddhist sculptures, and ritual and ornamental works made of terracotta, pottery, stone and jade.

The objects are on loan from ten leading museums in Vietnam, including the National Museum of Vietnamese History in Hanoi and the Museum of Vietnamese History, Ho Chi Minh City, which is providing Cham and Sa Huynh cultural artifacts.

The works have never been exhibited in the United States and many have never traveled outside of the country.

The display titled ‘Arts of Ancient Vietnam: From River Plain to Open Sea" will premiere in Houston on September 13, 2009 and will remain on view at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, through January 3, 2010.

The exhibition will be presented at Asia Society in New York from February 2 through May 2, 2010.
