HCM CITY — Approximately 5,000 university students attended the launching ceremony of the annual Green Summer Campaign yesterday at the HCM City Botanical and Zoological Garden.
The students represented more than 50,000 volunteers who joined the 16th green campaign, which will be implemented in 322 wards and villages in HCM City’s 24 districts.
Students will participate in various activities such as anti-illiteracy work, improving the environment, and building ‘gratitude’ houses for poor and disadvantaged residents.
A major component of the one-month campaign will see students contributing to environmental improvement in the city’s suburban districts, including Can Gio, Nha Be, Cu Chi, Binh Chanh and Hoc Mon.
Many of the volunteers will also provide assistance in 11 Central Highland provinces, the southern part of the country, and as far away as Laos, to improve the living standards of residents in rural areas.
In Laos, the volunteers will be split up into teams to assist in health care, agriculture, forestry, information technology and social work.
At the ceremony, Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, deputy chairwoman of the HCM City People’s Committee, encouraged the volunteers to work hard to assist people in rural areas and to learn from their experience in the campaign.
"Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn valuable lessons about human compassion, the lives of farmers and social affairs," she said, urging them to be whole-hearted and creative in their tasks.
"The campaign should be a preparation for enhancing the futures and the careers of the students," said Ha. "The volunteers will be more mature."
This year, the two southern provinces of Ben Tre and Tra Vinh will celebrate the tenth anniversary of the campaign in their localities. It will also mark the beginning of student support from the city for the people in the area.
Green Summer Campaign is among the five main campaigns mobilised by the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and the Viet Nam Students Association, including the Hoa Phuong Do, Hanh Quan Xanh, Tiep Suc Mua Thi and Ky Nghi Hong campaigns.
According to Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union figures, up to 95,000 volunteers have taken part in the five summer volunteer campaigns this year.
The annual campaign for youths began in 1993 as a rural anti-illiteracy campaign called Chien Dich Anh Sang Van Hoa He (Summer Anti-illiteracy Campaign).
Since 1997 the campaign has been expanded to include more activities and has been renamed the Green Summer Campaign. —
