Hanoi (VNA) – The Republic of Korea’s President Lee Myung-bak and Japanese Prime Minister Aso Taro have agreed that their two nations will make a joint effort to improve bilateral ties and promote cooperation in adopting measures to cope with the effects of the global financial crisis.
This was confirmed by the two leaders during their summit, which took place on Jan. 12 in Seoul, according to news agencies.
“RoK and Japan are trying to foster a future-oriented relationship and share common goals for regional stability. There are still many barriers, but I'm sure we are moving in the right direction,” President Lee said during a joint press conference.
The two leaders vowed to boost Japanese enterprises' investment in RoK and enhance exchanges between small and medium-sized enterprises in the two countries. They agreed to establish an annual forum for the CEOs of small firms, with an inaugural meeting planned for Japan in April.
They also agreed to expand their cooperation in financial issues, extend exchanges in science and technology and to undertake joint efforts in regard to nuclear issues on the Korean Peninsula, as well as national reconstruction in Afghanistan.
The meeting followed last month’s trilateral meeting between Japan, RoK and China.-
